Augmented Reality – one of the trending technologies. It presents the digital world into the real world. Not clear right? Confusing? I also got confused when I came across this technology. I had no idea about this technology. So, I started digging into it to understand what is an augmented reality? Why this technology is important? What is the purpose of augmented reality in real life?
Finally, I made a research and found out some of the useful information which I thought of sharing to my readers. Come let’s jump into it!!!
What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented Reality is the enhanced version of reality created between the real world and the virtual world. In simple words, direct or indirect objects are augmented with superimposed computer-generated images over a user’s view of the real world. Therefore, improving the current version of reality.
To provide user experience – sound, text, and touch feedbacks are added to computer-generated images. However, computer-generated images can have a street with a virtual route on it or your room with 3D model furniture.
This virtual data is superimposed into reality. This is through 3D images with connected devices such as smartphones, tablets or specially designed augmented glasses etc…
After digging about augmented reality, one thing will definitely come into your mind. That is, what is virtual reality? Because this looks similar to virtual reality.
Let’s look into the difference between Virtual reality and Augmented Reality.
Difference between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality?
Both augmented reality and virtual reality provide experience through 3D high definition audio and video. But there is a lot of difference. Virtual reality is completely immersive. It puts the user in an isolated reality. Whereas the augmented reality is partly immersive. It places the user to look around and through artificial objects thus enhancing their perception of reality.
Why Augmented reality is important?
Augmented Reality is important because it doesn’t create artificial intelligence. But, it plays with the existing environment and overlays features on it. Because of this advanced technology, the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulates.
Information about the environment and its objects is overlaid on the real world. This information can be virtual or real. For example, seeing other real sensed or measured information such as electromagnetic radio waves. These waves overlaid in exact alignment with where they actually are in space.
In addition, It also has a lot of potential in the gathering and sharing of tacit knowledge.
Augmentation techniques are typically performed in real time and in semantic contexts with environmental elements. Immersive perceptual information is sometimes combined with supplemental information like scores over a live video feed of a sporting event. This combines the benefits of both augmented reality technology and heads up display technology (HUD).
Implementation of Augmented Reality in real life in the present and in future:
It provides the following benefits in present and in future:
Traditionally, medical students have to practice surgeries on dead bodies to undergo the medical practice. But this technology combines the X-ray and MRI. As a result, it brings everything into a single view. The apps are developed for this purpose.
This technology can benefit a lot in GPS navigation. With the combination of camera and phone with GPS, users can see the selected route over the live line. This means they can view what is in front of their vehicle. In addition, it also helps in avoiding accidents.
Education and Training
It brings the ultimate results in the teaching and learning process. All the learning are presented to the students in a digital form. This help students to understand things quickly. Additionally, it also provides a success path for students with immersive real-life simulations.
Technology gives entirely real psychological and physical experience. Also, it helps to get the authentic virtual experience. It can be implemented in real life. It makes the learning process easier.
It accelerates the construction work because civil engineers can have quick access to virtual models. Furthermore, it saves time to re-think on design analysis for designers and architects.
Save money and time
Consumers can save both money and time. Their time will not waste in trying clothes. They will not waste time standing in a waiting line in front of the changing room. They can more clearly visualise what clothes will look good on them. As a result, they will save money also
Immersive Video Gaming
It brings a change in gaming. We have seen a couple of games which were developed based on this technology. Games like Pokémon Go and Star Wars are examples. These games have proved that users can experience real-world experience in gaming. There is a lot of improvement in the realistic gaming experience.
Advantages of Augmented Reality in Real Life
It brought many changes and a lot of advantages in real life. Therefore, some of the advantages are as follows:
- Enhances creativity
- Gives a new product experience
- Ability to preview the product visually
- User can experience real-time experience
- Enhances customers as well as brand experience
Disadvantages of Augmented Reality in Real life
When there are certain advantages to any technology, there are disadvantages as well. This technology has also got certain disadvantages which are as follows:
One of the biggest drawbacks is security and privacy. Because this technology is based on the collection, analysis, and redistribution of things. Also, it records the environment in real time. Moreover, it may cause legal issues due to the recording of real time.
Generally, augmented reality blurs the real world and the digital world. Hence, possible dangers can come from reality modification. An example that causes danger due to reality modification is the game Pokémon Go.
Moreover, this game also created controversy due to accidents and even deaths. There is a need to educate the users not to over-dependent on augmenting reality. Because they become passive when compared to the real world.
Business organisations, education institutes get benefit from this technology. But there is always a need to know the requirement of using the AR. Because developing and implementing augmented reality system is very costly. Not everyone has the capability to get this. Before getting into this system, it is better to know what the organisation is aiming for. Also, what is the primary goal of the organisation?
Not all the smartphones, tablets have the support of augmented reality applications. Developers must develop apps that should run smoothly on any device.
Hope you got a clear understanding of augmented reality technology.
