KARERI LAKE

Kareri, a small glacial lake perched at an elevation of 9,620ft in the Dhauladhar ranges of the mighty Himalayas. It is located in the Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh. The snow melting from the Dhauladhar range serves as the source of the lake. There is a temple of Lord Shiva and Shakti overlooking the lake.

Kareri Lake trek is the best-known trekking destination in the Dhauladhars. Kareri Lake trek is a popular trekking destination for those who love adventure and thrill and wish to spend some time in peace with nature.

The trek commences from a beautiful hill station Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh. Further, it moves to the base camp of the trek that is Kareri Village- a small beautiful hamlet located at an altitude of 5,906ft above sea level. The trail will take you through various dense forests of pines, deodars, and pretty quaint villages. The trek will also give an opportunity to explore the life of the locals and to know a bit of Pahadi culture. You will also come across the different ridges and beautiful forests of oak trees. In order to reach the Lake, you will pass the Kareri Nallah by crossing a wooden bridge. This will add excitement and adventure to your trek.

After doing this moderate trek, you will reach your final destination- Kareri Lake. And with glorious beauty of the lake, you will forget all your fatigue. Kareri lake also serves as a basecamp to other treks in Dhauladhar ranges like Chamba and Bharmour via Minkani Pass and Baleni Pass.

The Best time to visit or do this adventure is in the months of December to March as the lake remains frozen. In winters, the place is covered with snow and looks like a wonderland. In summer, you can see the crystal clear water of the lake, lush greenery of forests, and the weather remains pleasant and calm.

Transportation:

Mcleodganj is well connected to the major cities like Delhi and Chandigarh.

  • You will easily get a direct Volvo or AC bus from Delhi to Mcleodganj.
  • There are direct trains available from Delhi. 
  • The nearest airport is the Gaggal or Kangra Airport. You can take a direct flight from Delhi.
  • You can take a private taxi to reach Mcleodganj. It will be a little expensive but you will reach in less time. 

BRAHMATAL LAKE

Brahmatal, a lake where Lord Brahma has said to have meditated for several years. Brahmatal lake is named after Lord Brahma. Brahmatal Lake is perched at an altitude of 10,000ft in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. This lake is very famous among trekkers. For nature lovers, photographers, snow lovers, and adventure seekers Brahmatal lake trek offers a lot of opportunities to get close to nature.

The trek is of easy to moderate difficulty and can be covered in 7-8 days. The trek initiates from a small town Kathgodam. And further, the drive will take you to the base camp of the trek Lohajung. Lohajung is a small village in the Garhwal Himalayas. The village also serves as a basecamp for other treks like Roopkund and Bedni Bugyal trek. 

You will pass by many deep and shadowy forests of oaks, rhododendrons to snow-covered peaks, and lakeside camping at Bekaltal Lake, another beautiful lake surrounded by dense forests, and one of the amazing campsites during Brahmatal Lake. After reaching the top final destination Brahmatal Lake. You will see the astounding views of Mt. Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Trishul of the Garhwal Himalayas. 

Pitch your camps near the frozen lake and enjoy the serene beauty of snow-capped mountains peacefully. The trek is preferred to experienced trekkers or beginners who have some interest in trekking. Brahmatal trek is an alpine escape to the mountains.

The best time to do this trek is in winters when the lake freezes and the temperature drops down in negatives. In summers, the weather remains chilly and pleasant. Brahmatal lake is at a high altitude, so the weather fluctuates very frequently. 

You can reach Kathgodam by taking a direct train from Delhi to Kathgodam railway station.

The nearest airport is the PantNagar Airport about 35 km away. You can easily find cabs or taxis willing to take you Kathgodam.

Take a direct bus from Delhi and other major cities to reach Kathgodam or Nainital.

These two destinations are places with less crowds. Seasoned trekkers or experienced trekkers undertake both the snow adventures. If searching for some snowy chilly environment then, Kareri lake and Brahmatal Lake treks are best for you. They are moderate but not impossible. Plan a week-long trip and explore.
